Prof. Dr Mehmet Zihni Sungur
Psychiatrist
He completed his secondary education at Tarsus American College and graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1982. In 1984, he started his speciality studies at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. In 1985, he won a Council of Europe scholarship and worked in England on “Community Psychiatry” and “Different models in the structuring of mental health services”.

Between 1986-88, he was a British Council Scholar at the London Institute of Psychiatry (Kings College), where he received training in “behavioural therapies”, “sexual dysfunctions-sex therapies”, “marital therapies” and “anxiety disorders”.

In 1992, he received the title of Associate Professor of Psychiatry. After his associate professorship, he focused his studies especially on “Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies”, “Sexual Dysfunctions”, “Marital Therapies” and “Anxiety Disorders” and he was the founding president of the Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies in 1996 and the founding member of the Association of Sexual Education, Treatment and Research in 1998. He is currently the president of the Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies. He has served as the coordinator of “Family and Couple Therapies” and “Cognitive Behavioural Therapies Working Unit” of Psychiatric Association of Turkey. He has promoted and founded cognitive and behavioural therapies, which have the highest level of prestige among “evidence-based therapies” in the field of mental health, in our country and still provides trainings both in our country and in various countries of the world in order to use these therapies effectively.

In 2000 he was elected President of the European Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies (EABCT). Dr Sungur is accredited as a “cognitive-behavioural therapist” by the British Association of Psychotherapies and the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies. He is one of the founding members of the American Academy of Cognitive Therapy (Beck Academy), a diplomate of the same academy and one of the certified trainers and supervisors. In 2017, he became the first non-American president of the “International Association of Cognitive Therapies” (IACP), headquartered in the USA. In 2018, she was elected as the next president of the “European Federation of Sexology”. He has been the president of 7 international congresses and many national congresses with international participation.

In addition to the educational activities he has carried out in various countries abroad, he is an editor, consultant and editorial board member in many international and national scientific journals. He is a member of the advisory board of many scientific journals in Turkey. He has more than 100 articles published in scientific journals in Turkey and abroad, as well as various books and book chapters. “You, Me and Everything Between Us – Love, Marriage, Infidelity: The Devil’s Triangle”, which has been widely read. In addition, he has taken part as a speaker in hundreds of congresses in Turkey and abroad and has conducted various working groups. He provides trainings to mental health professionals both at home and abroad on topics such as “Cognitive Behavioural Therapies”, “Couple Therapies”, “Sexual Therapies”, “Anxiety Disorders” in accordance with European Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies training standards. In addition to many national and international professional awards, she was awarded a “gold medal award” by the European Federation of Sexology for her contributions to couple and sex therapies. She is currently working as a faculty member at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.
